Brain Injury & Stroke Outcomes 2011

Four programs at Courage Center collect outcomes for clients with brain injuries; the Transitional Rehabilitation Program (TRP), the Medical Rehabilitation Services (MRS), Community Reintegration Program (CRP), and the Independent Living Skills Program (ILS).

The average person in these programs:

  • Is male (64%), (female 36%)
  • Is 51 years old
  • Started the Courage Center program 2 months after injury
  • Stayed at Courage Center for 3 months

Outcomes

Overall, clients show great improvement from the beginning to the end in their abilities, adjustment and participation.

The areas found to have the most improvement include:

  • Independent living
  • Ability to participate in recreational activities (leisure)
  • Walking and moving
  • Self care
  • Fatigue 

Other areas where people improved were:

  • Moving and use of their hands
  • Speech, verbal communication and non-verbal communication
  • Attention and concentration, memory, and problem solving
  • Anxiety, depression, fatigue and pain-headache
  • Starting their own tasks, social contact, leisure
  • Self care, independent living, transportation, and money

Transitional Rehabilitation Program (TRP)

The TRP is a 48-bed nursing facility where clients stay at in Courage Center while doing rehabilitation.  The program’s goals are to help people do more and live on their own.

The average person in the TRP:

  • Is male (72%), (female 28%)
  • Is 50 years old
  • Has a 73 day stay
  • Starts the TRP about a month after injury

The subcategories of the Mayo-Portland where statistically significant (p= .001) improvements were made include:

  • Walking and moving, use of hands, and vision
  • Verbal communication, memory, and novel problem solving
  • Depression, fatigue, social contact, and leisure
  • Self care, independent living, transportation and money

Medical Rehabilitation Services (MRS)

Medical Rehabilitation Services offered at Courage Center include physical therapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, psychological services, and dietician services. 

The average person in MRS:

  • Is female (50%), (male 50%)
  • Is 51 years old
  • Has therapy for 4 months
  • Began MRS 10 months after the injury

Other areas where people got better are:

  • Moving, speaking, attention and concentration
  • Memory, problem solving, anxiety, irritability, and pain-headache
  • Fatigue, family relationships
  • Starting a task, leisure, and self care

Community Reintegration Program (CRP)

The Community Reintegration program is a program that helps people be as independent as possible.

The average person in CRP:

  • Is male (64%), (female 36%)
  • Is 46 years old
  • Has 6 months of therapy
  • Began CRP 3 years after their injury
