Cabin Leaders are accountable for camper and staff wellness, safety, adjustment, welfare and growth while at camp. Courage Camp Cabin Leaders provide exceptional quality outdoor and indoor experiences for campers with a focus on Courage Center’s mission of empowering people with physical disabilities to reach for their full potential in every aspect of life.

Major Responsibilties:

  • Direct and assist with personal care of campers (lifts, transfers, feeding, bladder/bowel care, dressing wheelchair pushing, general hygiene, and/or whatever other personal needs campers may have so they have a healthy, hygienic stay at camp.  Monitor health of campers and report any problems to the appropriate personnel.  Monitor camper behavior and attitudes and intervene appropriately so that campers have fun and relate well with each other.  Maintain a cheerful, positive, and supportive attitude and atmosphere in the cabin so that campers and staff work together to have a good overall camping experience.  
  • Abide by camp policies and procedures so that certification, legal guidelines, camp goals and objectives can be met.  
  • Direct and assist with activity leadership so that campers get the maximum involvement regardless of disability.  Maintain an encouraging environment so campers are free to try as much as possible and to do as much for themselves as they can.  Participate in all camp activities under the direction of the Cabin Coordinator so that programs are well run, campers are satisfied with their experiences, and camps objectives are accomplished. 
  • Supervise counselors and staff assigned to your cabin so that they learn their jobs and fulfill the requirements of their position with respect to cabin duties and the overall camp program.  
  • Assist with planning the weekly activities of your cabin so that camper goals are accomplished and campers have a fun and educational experience.  
  • Assist with pre-camp planning and training of new staff so that program and staff are prepared to accomplish camps goals.  
  • Assist in staff development so that counselors are improving in their jobs and better understanding their duties.  Supervise and monitor staff program coverage, nights out, lights out and days off plans this will assure acceptable coverage of assigned cabin. 

Requirements: 
 Required: Be at least 18 years old by first day of camp.
 Required: Able to plan and lead activities for campers with disabilities
 Preferred: Experience, competence and sensitivity in working with people with physical disabilities and people of     diverse races and cultures is highly valuable.
 
License/Certifications
Required:  First Aid/CPR


Communications:
An individual is expected to facilitate communications with clients, staff and visitors in all methods available to them:  American Sign Language, Oral English, written communication and use of communication devices.

Physical Demands: 
1. The ability to assist with lifting a client and push wheelchairs
2. The physical stamina and ability to work and participate in all camp activities for a sustained period of time.
