Description:
Camp Waterfront Staff include Lifeguards and a supervisor who are responsible for protecting the safety of campers in and around aquatic facilities. They supervise activities in the pool area at our Maple Lake location as well as on the lake waterfront for both Camp locations, and develop and facilitate aquatic activities for campers in cabin groups. Courage Center Camps Waterfront Staff provide exceptional quality outdoor and indoor experiences for campers with a focus on Courage Center’s mission of empowering people with physical disabilities to reach for their full potential in every aspect of life.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist Waterfront Supervisor with staff orientation to waterfront and test staff skill levels. Assist with preparing the waterfront and equipment before summer program begins.
  • Always make sure that campers and staff have a Personal Flotation Device.
  • Assist in lifting of campers from chair to water and back. Work as assigned in each waterfront area.
  • Help in loading campers onto pontoon.  Assist with insuring that pontoon is not overloaded and load is well-balanced.  When fishing, provide drop lines and bait for campers.
  • Assist with supervising all watercraft activities. Know the skill level and limitations of staff.  Enforce limits of participants in watercraft as appropriate. Provide assistance in loading watercraft. Provide instructions in watercraft use.  Know which staff members are qualified to operate sailboats and powerboats.  
  • General beachfront maintenance including keeping beach area clean, readiness of emergency boat, equipment inventory and maintenance.
  • When not involved in program, act as a counselor and take part in general camp activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Required: one year of experience as a lifeguard
Preferred:  one year of camping experience

License/Certifications:
Required: Current Lifeguard certification and First Aid and Professional Rescue CPR

Communications:
An individual is expected to facilitate communications with clients, staff and visitors in all methods available to them:  American Sign Language, Oral English, written communication and use of communication devices.

Physical Demands: 
1. The ability to assist with lifting a client and push wheelchairs
2. The physical stamina and ability to work and participate in all camp activities for a sustained period of time.
