Courage Center’s Program Focuses on Driver Safety

This includes:

  • Individual evaluation of drivers and their needs;

  • Defensive driving lessons in the city, on freeways, and in rural areas, and
  • Preparation for State Road Test

Survey Responses

Our last survey was sent to 63 driving program clients; 56 responded, of whom 32 were male and 24 were female. Ages are as shown in the graphic above.

What Problems Might Interfere With Driving?

Fourteen clients did not own a vehicle, and did not have equipment installed.

How Many Clients With Adaptive Equipment Are Driving?

Of the 24 clients with equipment installed, 19 are driving.  Eleven drive daily, while 8 drive less often.

  • Groceries/Shopping:  15

How Many Took Driving Lessons?

Altogether 49 clients out of 56 took driving lessons, of which:

  • 42 took lessons in order to take the State Road Test; and
  • 7 took lessons for personal reasons.

How Successful Were Clients Who Took The Test?

Of the 49 clients who took lessons:

  • 21 have taken the state road test
  • 20 passed
  • 19 are now driving
  •  7 had no plans to take test

Twenty-one clients did not take the state road test after their driving lessons, because they wanted more practice, had medical or other reasons, or wanted to take a break prior to the test.

How Many Clients Had Adaptive Equipment Recommended Without Driving Lessons?

The staff of the Drivers Program recommended adaptive equipment for seven people who did not need driving lessons. Four people had the equipment installed.

How Satisfied Were Clients Who Had Adaptive Equipment Installed?

One hundred percent of clients were satisfied with their equipment.

Why Was Equipment Not Installed If Recommended?

Clients did not have equipment installed for several reasons, including a lack of money for a car or for the equipment, a need for more training, or their conditon improved medically so they did not need the equipment.

Were Drivers Services Clients Satisfied?

Some expectations were not met because clients wanted more training, or because they had not passed the state road test after taking it the second time. Forty-eight out of 56 clients who returned the survey, or 87%, were satisfied with our program and would recommend it to others.
