Courage Center part of north Minneapolis housing community for older adults
A first-of-its-kind senior public housing community has opened in the Heritage Park area of north Minneapolis under the direction of the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA). In addition to the MPHA, the unique initiative brings together Courage Center, Augustana Care, the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities, Neighborhood HealthSource and the Minneapolis Highrise Representative Council. Courage Center will provide physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as aquatic therapy and pool services.

The Thomas T. Feeney Manor is an assisted living and memory care community for low-income adults age 55 and over. MPHA will also open a comprehensive senior services health and wellness center for residents living on site and older adults in the community. These two new facilities will combine with the agency’s 102-unit senior community, Heritage Commons at Pond’s Edge, to create the Heritage Park Senior Campus. Feeney Manor is the first public housing community in the nation to offer enhanced assisted living and comprehensive memory care housing with services, managed by Augustana Care.
Neighborhood HealthSource, a federally qualified health center that has served the needs of North Minneapolis at its Fremont Clinic site for over forty years, has been selected to offer a full service medical clinic with innovative programs and treatments tailored to the specific needs of seniors living in North Minneapolis.
The YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities will offer specific exercise courses with nationally certified trainers assisting older adults with life-enriching exercise programs and fostering greater independence and self-reliance.
In addition to providing management and services at Thomas T. Feeney Manor, Augustana Care will also bring its award-winning Augustana Open Circle adult day program to the senior services center.
The Minneapolis Highrise Representative Council, a citywide independent public housing highrise tenant organization, is locating their offices at the Heritage Park Senior Services Center. The council represents 5,000 households in forty-one highrises.
The Heritage Park Senior Services Center and Thomas T. Feeney Manor are funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds competitively awarded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Infrastructure and environmental funds came through the City of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Metropolitan Council and the State of Minnesota. The senior center also received over $4 million in New Market Tax Credits.
