Client using IM Gait Mate

Innovative New Treatment for Movement Disorders

Courage Center is a leader in using new and advanced technologies to maximize functional performance in the clients that we serve. The Interactive Metronome Gait Mate - now available at all four Courage Center locations - is one of these key pieces of equipment that specifically focuses on improving an individual’s walking pattern.

The IM Gait Mate will be used to augment traditional rehabilitation approaches for children, adolescents and adults with neurological conditions, orthopedic conditions, brain injuries and sport injuries, within a therapy treatment plan.

Areas of gait that can be addressed include:

  • Stride length
  • Heel strike
  • Gait stamina
  • Weight shifting
  • Gait speed/timing
  • Quality of movement

More About the IM Gait Mate

The Interactive Metronome has been in use by the therapy community for nearly 10 years to assess and treat difficulties in motor planning, sequencing, coordination and balance. The IM Gait Mate takes this technology on the move by allowing an individual to work on these skills while walking.

The IM Gait Mate consists of a wireless shoe insert that is activated when an individual’s heel strikes the ground. A constant reference tone can be heard through wireless headphones set to a desired gait speed; additional, real-time auditory feedback is given to direct the user if their speed is too fast, too slow or right on.
