Intensive Therapy: TheraSuit Method

Strengthening Children with Neurological Disorders

Children with neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury or developmental delay now have the option of participating in a unique and effective treatment program at Courage Center Burnsville. The program, called “Intensive Therapy,” focuses on strengthening and core stability. It is ideal for those looking to accelerate their progress in developmental and functional skills.

Intensive therapy is a three-week program of daily one-on-one interactions between the client and a physical therapy team member (physical therapist or physical therapist assistant). Sessions run three hours a day, five days a week.

The program has three phases:

  1. Preparation
  2. Using the Universal Exercise Unit for stretching, range of motion, strengthening, balancing and coordination
  3. Suit Therapy using the TheraSuit for strengthening, gait training, and neurological re-education

The program begins with the family completing a medical history questionnaire. The child needs a physician’s order to participate, and must have recent hip x-rays completed and the results given to us. The child also must be able to cognitively understand and follow directions.

Upon acceptance to the program, a physical therapy evaluation is set up. This provides us with base line data, ensures that there are no complicating factors, and helps establish individual goals for the program.
