Outpatient Spasticity Clinic

Spasticity is a painful and disabling condition causing stiffness of muscles. It can interfere with all muscle activities, including walking, movement and speech. It can also lead to joint contractures.  Spasticity can be caused by brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke and other neurological conditions.

Courage Center’s new outpatient Spasticity Clinic provides comprehensive evaluations and treatment of spasticity. An interdisciplinary team of specialized physicians, nurses and physical and occupational therapists will develop an individualized plan of care for each patient.

Goals of treatment include:

  • Improved mobility
  • Reduction in pain and spasms
  • Improved range of motion
  • Increased independence and function

Treatment may include:

  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Individualized Exercise Program
  • Bioness technology
  • Medication management
  • Botox and Phenol injections
  • Intrathecal Baclofen pump
  • Customized casting or splinting
  • Gait assessment and training
  • Assistive technology & equipment recommendations
  • Speech and swallowing therapy
  • Client and family education
  • Supportive services
  • Orthopedic procedures
  • Referral to other specialists
